Ecotone

An ecotone is a transition zone between two adjacent ecosystems or ecological communities, where species from both areas may coexist and interact. It can occur between habitats such as forest and grassland, freshwater and terrestrial systems or marine and coastal environments. Ecotones often exhibit high biodiversity and dynamic ecological processes because they reflect gradients in environmental conditions such as moisture, temperature or soil type.
